According to a 2008 study, about 15% of Americans have at least one tattoo. In Hollywood, the percentage must be much higher, since it seems that just about every celebrity has at least one tattoo. Among the most notable fans of tattoo ink are:

1) Angelina Jolie: With more than a dozen tattoos, Angelina Jolie adds to her collection of tattoo ink art almost annually. She has the letter “h” on her left wrist, a tribute to her brother, James, and an “M” on her right hand, a tribute to her mother, Marcheline Bertrand. On her left arm, she has coordinates representing the places where she gave birth and adopted her children. Below her navel, she has a phrase in Latin which translates to “what nourishes me also destroys me”. Between her shoulder blades is the phrase “know your rights.” On her forearm, there is a tattoo in Arabic which represents “strength of will”. On her abdomen, she has a Latin cross. Her left forearm sports the number 13 in roman numerals. On her back, she has two tribal tattoos, an Asian tiger, and a dragon. Her left shoulder has a prayer in Buddhist Sanskrit symbols. She also has a quote “A prayer for the wild at heart, kept in cages,” on her left forearm. That quote is by writer Tennessee Williams.

2) Hayden Panettiere has the Italian word “Vivere” on her back. The word means “to live.”

3) Singer Ashlee Simpson has a large, colorful peony on her left wrist. She has a peace sign on the middle finger of her right hand and a star tattooed on the inside of her left wrist. Inside her right wrist she has the word “love” tattooed.

4) Singer Rihanna has the words ” Never a failure, always a lesson” tattooed prominently on her chest, close to her shoulder. The tattoo is unusual in that it is written backwards, so that the singer can see the message clearly when looking at herself in a mirror.

5) Nicole Ritchie: Nicole Ritchie has a rosary tattooed around her left ankle, which is her most prominent tattoo. She also has eight additional tattoos. One unusual bit of ink on Ritchie is accidental; she has small dots tattooed on her finger. They stem from an incident when she picked up a tattoo gun and dropped it – surely a good warning not to play with tattoo inks, tattoo equipment or tattoo machines.
